1D Day was an interactive livestream event created to promote One Direction’s third album, Midnight Memories. It aired on November 23, 2013, and included the band engaging in games, interviews, and live performances.
On November 20, a video was posted on One Direction’s YouTube channel explaining the event and announcing special guests like Robbie Williams, the Muppets (Miss Piggy and Kermit), Celine Dion, Kelly Rowland, and Simon Cowell. The band confirmed that the show would be a seven-hour live broadcast featuring “just us.” The livestream promised “exclusive behind-the-scenes footage,” previews of new album tracks, world record attempts, and many other special guests. The event was officially hosted on Google+ and YouTube.
Day of Stream
The show was held at the YouTube Space in LA and featured Guinness World Record attempts, Google+ calls, and guest interviews.
The set was designed with a “cozy area” filled with sofas for interviews with the band, an “interactive zone” with a large screen where the members connected with fans on Google Hangouts, and welcomed guests like Peter Jones and Stan Lucas. There was also a wall featuring a large world map with multiple clocks showing various global time zones. Another part of the set displayed fan art on a large screen, and a live band with Josh Devine, Dan Richards, Jon Shone, and Sandy Beales played near a small performance area. A limited audience attended, though many were in a special cinema room backstage. Additionally, an “exclusive listening booth,” styled as a red telephone box, allowed two fans at a time to preview the new album.
